The Joy of Salvation - Luke 1:57-80

We continue in the Advent Season as we look at the Gospel of Luke’s account of the birth narrative focusing on Luke 1:57-80 this morning. Here in this passage we return to the promised son to Zechariah and Elizabeth.  The ground of salvation is being paved, the way is becoming clear, and the promise is beginning to be realized.  Salvation is coming, is near and is proclaimed.  Do you know the salvation of what John the Baptist spoke of?  Come and hear the good news!

The Joy of Jesus

In this message, we enter the Advent Season as we look at the Gospel of Luke’s account of the birth narrative focusing on Luke 1:39-56 this morning. The “Magnificat” is a beautiful expression of joy over who Jesus is as the Redeemer. We need this joy as we face a broken world and our own broken lives. We need a lasting joy that comes from Jesus who is greater than all our circumstances. Our sermon text helps us find and receive that joy in Jesus.

The Humility from God's Promises | Luke 1:26-3

We enter the Advent Season as we look at the Gospel of Luke’s account of the birth narrative focusing on Luke 1:26-38 this morning. Another visit from Gabriel, but this time to a young virgin girl named Mary.  What is this about? How is the story of redemption furthered through this interaction and event?  Even more, how should our lives be marked with humility as we rest in the promises of God?  Let’s wrestle through this together, in joy, as we worship the Lord on Sunday!

The Witness of Christ - Luke 1:5-25

We prepare for the Advent Season as we look at the Gospel of Luke’s account of the birth narrative focusing on Luke 1:5-25 this morning. John the Baptist certainly is an interesting figure in the Bible: eating locusts, itchy clothing, preaching brimstone type messages. What can we learn from him? Even more, how are to have similar faith and ministry as did he? Listen this Sunday!

Pursuing Holiness That Comes Through Grace | Nehemiah 10:28-31

In this message, we continue the sermon series in Nehemiah looking at 10:28-31. Holiness is one of those church words that comes with confusion or even baggage. For example, sometimes it (wrongly) is said, "Only the really good people are holy." Such statements leave us feeling guilty because we know that we do not measure up. The text from Nehemiah shows us that holiness is not doing more for God but instead pursuing the holy God who makes us more and more like him.

The Renewal from Confession | Nehemiah 9:16-17

We continue the sermon series in Nehemiah looking at chatper 9 focusing on verses 16-17. The wall was rebuilt and now the people is being rebuilt. The started with the returning to the Word of God and now they are living out the Word of God which calls them to confession. Confession is a humbly act, a turning away from self and to God, knowing that He is a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, who will never forsake His people.

The Power of the Word - Nehemiah 8:1-8

In this message, we continue the sermon series in Nehemiah looking at 8:1-8. Nehemiah has seen the wall completed, the city being rebuilt, but there is more to his task. The task was not merely external, but the goal has always been to the end of transformation. God transforms us through the preached Word, the good words of God given to the people of God for our good. The Word of God is the power that builds the church. Is it our joy, love, and delight?

The Priority of Mercy - Nehemiah 5:1-13

We continue the sermon series in Nehemiah looking at 5:1-13. In Nehemiah, the rebuilding of the wall seems to be going well, but then an internal conflict arises. The people are failing to take care of their own. They are failing to rebuild their city with a foundation of mercy. We will see how mercy is a foundation to our church and we will be challenged that as Jesus shows us mercy, we now are to show mercy to others.

Overcoming Opposition | Nehemiah 4:1-9

We continue the sermon series in Nehemiah looking at chapter 4:1-9. We see in Nehemiah that we are to build up the kingdom of God. That should be easy, right? Unfortunately, there is much opposition in doing God's work. How do we overcome opposition? How does God walk with us in adversity? Listen to the sermon to find out!

Today, we come to the conclusion of Stephen’s message to the leaders in Israel. His call to repent is met with fierce anger and a hail of stones. In Acts 7:51-60 we are given a glimpse, with Stephen, to see the risen and ascended Christ who is our judge, intercessor and advocate.

The Magnificat - Luke 1:46-55

We begin our Advent series, this focusing on the songs in Luke. For many, the Christmas season is about music and for Luke, there are a series of songs, from Mary’s Magnifcat (magnify), Zechariah’s Benedictus (blessed), Angel’s Gloria (glory), Shepherd’s Praise, and Simeon’s Nunc Dimittis (now dismiss). This morning we begin with Mary’s song of praise (Luke 1:39-56), as she magnifies the Lord by confessing her need of His provision, power, and promises.

Honest Assessment - Nehemiah 2:11-18

Today we continue the sermon series in Nehemiah looking at 2:11-18. It takes a lot of courage to be honest about oneself. To truly look at the dirt and brokenness in one's heart... who really wants to to do that? Yet, because we are loved with Jesus' perfect love, we can honestly evaluate ourselves and find hope in Christ.

The Resurrection and Working Hard | 1 Corinthians 15:1-10

We welcome our new Interim Pastor, Jamie MacGregor to Cornerstone.  It's Labor Day weekend and in some ways this holiday reminds of heaven -- when we have a final rest from all our earthly labor. What are we to do, though, until that final day? 1 Corinthians 15 says we are to labor with all of God's strength until that day arrives.

Haggai asks the people of good some pretty hard questions in this section.  Does our sin have an effect on the good things we do?  What effect does our sin have on our holy acts?  What effect does our holy acts have on our evil ones?  We are to be holy, yes, but thankfully we serve a God who sent his Son, Jesus, to earth that our holiness would not be dependent upon our actions but His perfect life given to us.

The Greater Glory of Peace, Haggai 2:1-9

In this message, we continue the sermon series in the book of Haggai. This week in Haggai 2:1-9 we see that there are still some discouragements and fears in the people, but God reminds them of his promises and extends an even bigger promise that peace will come from the house of the Lord. The promises of the Lord fuel the work of the people to the glory of God and for the good of the people!

We start a new sermon series in the book of Haggai that will take us through the month of August. Haggai is a contemporary of Ezra in the post exile season of God’s people. His call is for covenant renewal, faithfulness, and restoration beginning with and being exemplified in the rebuilding of the temple. We too need to hear the message of this small yet significant book as we wrestle with our priorities, our worship, and our covenant faithfulness. We’ll be looking at Haggai 1:1-15 this morning.

The Gospel according to Matthew speaks often of the Kingdom of Heaven especially in Chapters 13 with a number of parables. This morning we look at two of those parables, the Parable of the Hidden Treasure and the Parable of the Pearl of Great Value. What is our ultimate treasure and value? What gives our life meaning? What grid do we have to make life’s hard decision? Steve Iler will be preaching and developing these themes this morning on Matthew 13:44-46.

Household Matters | Colossians 3:18 - 4:1

We continue in the Colossians series looking at 3:18-4:1.  The call to mortify the flesh and put on the holy clothes of the Gospel has deep ramifications for every sphere of life we live in.  There are ramifications in our marital relationships, family/parenting dynamics, and work/vocation arenas.  We see in this couple of verses the outflow of v17 of chapter 3, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”  Let’s apply these truths to our everyday living.

Behaviors ≠ Sanctification | Colossians 2:16-23

We continue in the Colossians sermon series.  This morning we will look at Colossians 2:16-23 as Paul continues to address what it means to grow in holiness.  Our growth is only from and in Christ, everything else is merely shadows, having the appearance of wisdom but not drawing us live out of Christ more.  All of life from beginning to end is from Christ.  All of our spiritual growth is from and found in Christ.  Everything else fails to glory in Christ and live out of the growth Jesus offers.

We continue in the Colossians sermon series.  This morning we will look at Colossians 2:6-15 as Paul continues to address the fullness of Christ.  Arguments that dilute Christ are all around us in this world, but they must be confronted with Scripture and the Gospel.  Paul says that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not just some you received (past tense) but is at work (present tense) in you as we walk by faith.  Being “In Christ” assures us fullness and life.  It can be found nowhere else.

In this message, We welcome Rev. Mike Wenzler the Reformed University Fellowship pastor for the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.  We will be looking at Mark 8:27-33 this morning   The Gospel of Mark was written intentionally and had purpose. Mark deliberately wanted his readers to wrestle with 2 specific questions: Who is Jesus? And what did Jesus come to do? Implicitly, God's people are called to follow Jesus as disciples. But what does that entail?

The Resurrection Life - John 11:1-44

Resurrection Sunday! What a great morning to celebrate that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. We will explore John 11:1-44 where Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead and where he claims that he is the resurrection and the life. The resurrection of Jesus shouldn’t give us mere hope for life after death (it does though), but should dramatically change the way we live right now, how we experience our life now, and should anchor our hope now and for the life to come.

Foundations Part 2 Colossians 1:18-23

This morning, we continue our series in Colossians looking at Colossians 1:18-23.  Paul continues to address the heretical teaching that is being taught by the false teachers in Colossae.  Jesus is God, Creator and Sustainer (1:15-17) but sometimes, and maybe often, this world and our lives seem unhinged. Jesus is the Head of the Church and his mission is to reconcile all things, things of creation and most significantly human beings, like Paul, the Colossians, and each of us.  The promise of all things will be made new is great hope for the Christian to cling to in this world.

Foundations Part 1, Colossians 1:15-17

In this message, we continue our series in Colossians looking at Colossians 1:15-17. Paul now begins to address the heretical teaching that is being taught by the false teachers in Colossae. All truths and all false teachings have a starting point. We need to get Jesus right in our theology or all that follows will be off. So Paul returns to foundational teaching that Jesus is God, Jesus is Creator, and Jesus is Sustainer. If we get any one of these 3 wrong the wheels fall off our theology.

We continue our new series in Colossians looking at Colossians 1:9-14.  Having heard of Pauls love for the Colossians and thanksgiving to God for them, we now see that he is driven to regular prayer for them.  Pauls three-fold prayer highlights areas we can be praying for one another in addition to regular needs.  Paul prays that the Colossians would be filled with understanding so as to walk fully, pleasing by being strengthened to joy.  Always resting in the reality that our identity is that of qualified ones, those fully fit, complete through the work of Christ.

The Gospel: Grace & Peace Colossians 1:1-8

Today in Worship – This morning we start a new series looking at Paul’s letter to the Colossians.  The whole service will be designed in a way to give us an overview of the book.  Paul begins his letter with thankfulness for the church because of their clinging to the Gospel, their hope.  The gospel then is bearing much fruit and increasing among them and the whole world. Paul’s love for this church he never visited, is seen by his desire that they grasp the fullness of the gospel and are not swayed by false teaching.  We are challenged this morning to cling to the gospel as it bears fruit.

How will this persecutor turned preacher be received among the Christians and used to build God's Kingdom? What does this mean for us? We see in this account that God not only pursues people but strengthens them for his service. Through this passage we will explore the ways in which we too can be strengthened as we live out the Gospel in our own day.
