Farewell Message Pt 2, Acts 20:17-38

Extravagant Grace - Matthew 20:1-16

Chris brings to conclusion his time preaching here at Cornerstone. This week we will look at Matthew 20:1-16, where the vineyard owner hires workers throughout the day and then pays them all equally. Here we see the extravagance of God’s grace, as well as the Father’s commitment to calling us to labor for Him. The next two weeks will look at Paul’s farewell address to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20.

The Gospel vs Magic - Acts 8:9-25

We return to Luke’s Act of the Apostles. Following the stoning of Stephen and the persecution of the church at the hands of Saul, the church expands outside of traditional Jewish boundaries into Samaria. In Acts 8:9-22 Peter confronts Simon, who although he believes, wishes to obtain the power he sees in the Apostles. In this passage we see the conflict and difference between the gospel and magic.

Simeon's Nunc Dimittis - Luke 2:22-35

We conclude our Advent series, focusing on the songs in Luke, as we consider Simeon's Nunc Dimittis. As Jesus and Mary meet the law's demands of purification in Jerusalem, they encounter Simeon, who awaits Israel's comfort. Upon Seeing Jesus, he announces that now the Sovereign Lord may dismiss him. Luke 2:22-35 calls us to wait patiently as Christ's coming reveals both God's salvation and our rejection. However, we can rest in Christ as the light of our salvation.

Faith Alone Galatians 2:15-21

Today in Worship – we continue on our five-week series looking at the Five Solas of the Reformation. In light of the 500^th anniversary of the Reformation begun by Martin Luther, we will consider these foundational elements, the solas, in which the Church has pronounced that these aspects must stand alone.  This morning we examine solus Christus, that it is Christ alone. Scripture teaches that Christ’s work on our behalf is both sufficient and exclusive. For that reason Christ Alone is said to be the glue of all five solas. We will see this in 1 Timothy 2:5-7 this morning.

Unexpected Grace - Acts 7:1-8

Stephen, brought before the Sanhedrin, Israel’s court, on charges profaning the Temple, offers his defense. In Acts 7:1-8, Stephen begins with God’s unexpected grace in calling of Abraham. We are likewise challenged to see God’s gracious hand in bringing people to Himself, but often through unexpected means and toward a goal that is not fully realized in our own lives.

Today in Worship – we encounter the tension we all face in confessing our faith in a world that does not see life through the lens of the resurrection. In Acts 4:13-22, Peter and John are brought before the Sanhedrin, Israel’s Supreme Court, and are told to cease speaking of Jesus. Their response guides our thoughts today as to how we are to think and speak in today’s world.

God's Restoration of Brokenness - Acts 3:11-26

After the healing of the lame man, the crowds were astonished at what they saw. Peter, in Acts 3:11-26, connects the restoration of health of the lame man with the restorative power of the Gospel. The renewal in our lives comes as we see our own brokenness and need for spiritual health and then looking to Christ for the refreshing for which we so long.

God's Grace in Christ's Humiliation and Exaltation - Acts 2:22-36

In Acts 2:22-36 Peter transitions from God’s work in sending the Spirit to a bold proclamation of the Heavenly Father’s grace in Jesus’ humiliation and exaltation. What happened to Jesus on the cross was not only prophecied centuries before, but was a part of God’s definite plan. This plan also included the resurrection and ascension of God’s Anointed One. The crucified One is now the exalted One, seated at the Father’s right hand.

I Am The True Vine - John 15:1-11

In this message, to live is to change, and yet, change is something very hard for all of us. We struggle when change comes upon us and struggle when we know we are not what we should be. In John 15, Jesus offers us the root of all change in our connection to the Vine. When Jesus announces that He is the vine and that in Him we have hope of bearing fruit, we see how being transformed by Christ is our only hope.

I Am John 8:43-59

Today in Worship – In the weeks leading up to Resurrection Sunday, April 16^th, we will examine the six I Am statements in John’s Gospel. In each of these settings, Jesus provides for us a glimpse into how He provides for us, culminating on Easter Sunday, that He is the resurrection and the life. This Sunday we begin with John 8:58 wherein Jesus clearly states His divinity and, in so doing, sets for us how we are to understand our identity in Him.

Ezra 1 - When God Brings Us Home

We begin a journey out of Captivity back into the Promised Land wherein we have the privilege to worship our God who keeps His promise. We are launching an eight week study of Ezra, the story of the small remnant of Judah who returned to Jerusalem in 538 BC to reestablish the Temple. While centuries and culture may separate us, we are joined with our ancestors in the faith with the high calling to worship our redeeming God in the midst of a confusing world.

2 Kings 22 Finding The Word of God

In this message we meet the last good king in Judah, Josiah in 2 Kings 22. While repairing the Temple, the Book of the Law is discovered, having been neglected for some time. Josiah’s remorse and repentance opens the doors for more reforms, which we will see next week. Here we see the foundation of God’s Word as our only hope upon which we can build our lives.

2 Kings 12:1-16 Repairing God's Temple

In this message...while king after king in the north fails to honor God, there is a king in Judah, who “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.” Jehoash, under the tutelage of Jehoiada the priest, engages in a Temple restoration project in 2 Kings 12:1-16. After years of the false worship of Baal, the nation of Judah joins together to focus on true worship. However, the writer of 2 Kings notes that all is not perfect, the people still went to the high places to make sacrifices. Godly influences are vital, but a personal commitment to right worship if vital.

Today in Worship…we continue with the life of Elisha, as he continues in the line of the Prophet, of whom Moses spoke, pointing to the prophet who was to come…Jesus Christ. In 2 Kings 4, the land has the stench of death. Famine reduces a widow to sell her sons into slavery, another boy goes to help his father with the harvest, but dies, and when the sons of the prophets gather to eat during the famine, their meal has the stench of death. Into this morbidity, comes Elisha, a forerunner of Jesus, bringing freedom to the captive, life out of death and satisfies our deepest hunger.

A New Leader...The Same God

[In this message we return to the time of the Kings in Judah and Israel, a time of turmoil as the nation is divided both politically and in religious affection. 2 Kings opens with the conclusion of the Elijah’s story.
