Extravagant Grace - Matthew 20:1-16

Chris brings to conclusion his time preaching here at Cornerstone. This week we will look at Matthew 20:1-16, where the vineyard owner hires workers throughout the day and then pays them all equally. Here we see the extravagance of God’s grace, as well as the Father’s commitment to calling us to labor for Him. Today in Worship – This morning we begin the season of Advent.  Advent calls the church and her people into a season of waiting with the purpose of developing within us an acute recognition of God’s purposes and work in this world, specifically sending His Son, Jesus Christ into the world, the Incarnate Word made flesh.  But we also look forward to what is to come, the return of Christ, the renewal of all things.  This morning we focus on Peace as we look at Matthew 10:34-39.  Earthly peace can be elusive but eternal peace is ours already in Christ and will be fully enjoyed when all things are made new.

In this sermon, Rev. Dan Quakkelaar looks at Matthew 9:9-13. After calling Matthew to follow him, the Pharisees catch Jesus reclining with Matthew’s friends – sinners and agents of Herod Antipas’ tax collection force. They question the propriety of Jesus’ association with those who drag down the whole culture of Israel. But Jesus, setting the pattern of the gospel of grace for us, questions the pharisaical avoidance of these fallen Israelites, and condemns their lack of mercy.

Matthew 1:18-23 & Isaiah 7:10-17 - The Promise of God's Presence

In this sermon, Rev. Chris Vogel will look at Matthew 1:18-23 and Isaiah 7:10-17 in conjunction with the Prophecy Candle as we reflect on the promise from ages past in which a virgin will give birth to a son, whose name will be Immanuel, God with us. The music of this season begins on a note of reflection in anticipation of the celebration of Christ’s birth. Just as Israel longed for redemption in the midst of darkness, so the advent songs reflect longing for the need of deliverance and redemption. As we move closer to Christmas Day, the music focuses more on the joy and hope realized by Christ’s birth, the deliverance and hope that it brings.
