God's Word Alone 2nd Timothy

Today in Worship – we begin a five-week series looking at the Five Solas of the Reformation. In light of the 500^th anniversary of the Reformation begun by Martin Luther, we will consider these foundational elements, the solas, in which the Church has pronounced that these aspects must stand alone.  This morning we begin with sola scriptura, that Scripture alone and not the traditions of the church are the basis on which we base our faith.

Our Reception by the Resurrected Christ- Acts 7: 51-60

   Today, we come to the conclusion of Stephen’s message to the leaders in Israel. His call to repent is met with fierce anger and a hail of stones. In Acts 7:51-60 we are given a glimpse, with Stephen, to see the risen and ascended Christ who is our judge, intercessor and advocate.

Seeing Our Need in Worship- Acts 7:35-53

   Today, we continue with Stephen’s speech before the Jewish court, the Sanhedrin, giving a defense that their rejection of Jesus as Messiah is par for God’s people throughout the centuries. Having shown that the Gospel does not deny the authority of God’s Law given through Moses, so also Jesus does not destroy, but fulfills the function of the Temple. In Acts 7:35-53 we see our need for true worship.

Philippians 4:4-9

Unexpected Grace - Acts 7:1-8

Stephen, brought before the Sanhedrin, Israel’s court, on charges profaning the Temple, offers his defense. In Acts 7:1-8, Stephen begins with God’s unexpected grace in calling of Abraham. We are likewise challenged to see God’s gracious hand in bringing people to Himself, but often through unexpected means and toward a goal that is not fully realized in our own lives.

Today in Worship – We will be looking at Acts 16:6-15. The Apostle Paul and his companions find closed doors as they attempt and reattempt to spread the Gospel in the provinces of Asia. But as they wait, the Lord opens door to plant the very first church in Europe. It is easy to get frustrated and discouraged when our plans just don’t seem to work out! But this passage reminds us that the discouragements of what it may seem as a closed door are not dead-ends, but are pathways to new directions as long as we are in alignment to God’s will. This passage also reminds us that the Lord is at work and He invites us to join Him where He is at work!

The Danger of Counterfeit Goodness - Acts 5:1-11

In this message, we see played out what author George MacDonald said, “Half of the misery in the world comes from trying to look, instead of trying to be, what one is not!”. Acts 5:1-11 we briefly meet Ananias and Sapphira who lied to the Holy Spirit, claiming a devotion to the church they did not honor. Their sudden death brought fear to the church, as it should to our hearts when we are faced with our own hypocrisy.

Encouragement Flowing From the Cross Acts 4:32-37

Today in Worship – we see how the Gospel shapes us to encourage others. In Acts 4:32-37, the early church was characterized by unity, so much so that they shared what they had. In this passage we meet Joseph, also called Barnabas, a name which means son of encouragement, who sold his land and gave it to the Apostles. In the midst of this passage about giving and helping those in need, we are reminded that the resurrection of Jesus was at the heart.

Powerful Prayer Acts 4: 23-32

Today, we are reminded of the One to whom we go in prayer and what we must seek. In Acts 4:23-32, God’s people gather to pray to our Sovereign Lord, asking for boldness to proclaim the good news of Christ’s death and resurrection. We, like the early church, must understand God’s gracious control of His universe, and that He works His world for His glory. With this rooted in our hearts, we can move forward boldly.

Today in Worship – we encounter the tension we all face in confessing our faith in a world that does not see life through the lens of the resurrection. In Acts 4:13-22, Peter and John are brought before the Sanhedrin, Israel’s Supreme Court, and are told to cease speaking of Jesus. Their response guides our thoughts today as to how we are to think and speak in today’s world.

The Power of a Name Acts 4:1-12

We return to our series in Acts picking up on the repercussions of the healed man (from Acts 3) as we tackle Acts 4:1-12.  Today we will see a strong inquiry from the Sadducees to Peter and the others, “By what power or by what name did you do this (healing)?”  Peter not only responds factually but preaches the good news.  We often bolt when persecuted, buckle under pressure, or boast in self promotion over powerfully resting in the name of Jesus.  There is power in one name, Jesus Christ, who saves us physically and spiritually, redeeming our need for self-protection, self-worth and self-focus.  What name do you claim?

God's Celebration Over His Deniers- Zephaniah 3:14-20
